Ayurveda
The aim of Ayurveda (Ayu means life and Veda is knowledge or science) is two-fold:-The maintenance of health in a healthy man and the relief from disease in a patient. Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of diseases or infirmity.
The primary position relegated to equilibrated state of Thridosha (Vatha, Pitha, Kapha) in this definition of a healthy man indicates their importance in the maintenance of health. It can also be summarized that any disturbance in that equilibrated state leads to the development of disease . Therefore, the health can be visualized as a physiological maintenance of all the functions of the body and the disease as a disturbance in the physiology.
The ancient scriptures have laid out instructions to maintain health as well as fighting illness through therapies, herbs and herbal oil treatments, herbal medicines, mithahara (moderate food) and vihara (daily routine).
A healthy person explain systematized daily routine ie.Dinacharya, life in accordance with different seasons ie Rhitucharya and well –planned schedules of diet and exercise i.e. Vyayama. Also explain how to dissolve negative energy to maintain a balanced mind and body.
Ayurveda in Kerala
Kerala with its pleasant climate and ideal geographic location is famous for Ayurveda treatments. The humidity in Kerala is high and this factor helps to open up the body pores making the medicinal oils used in massaging get easily absorbed into the body thereby increasing the effectiveness of the treatment. In Kerala the classical authentic Panchakarma therapies are given along with the reputed Kerala preparatory therapies. An extensive variety of exclusive herbal based formulations are used other than the metal and mineral based drugs used elsewhere.
Yoga
The word yoga is derived from its root word “YUG”, meaning ‘union’; the union of the individual soul Jeevathma with the supreme soul Paramathma. The ultimate aim of yoga is liberation.
However, at a basic level, yoga is simply to facilitate a healthier and more beneficial standard of living by creating harmony between the body, mind, intellect and spirit. Yoga helps us get in touch with our true selves, and if you follow yoga life, chances are that you will feel its psycho-physiological effects and it will promote the experience of a more complete life.
According to scriptures, the scientific method of yoga is called Ashtanga yoga. There are eight limbs in Ashtanga yoga,(Yema, Niyamas, Asana, Pranayama, Prethyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi) which aims to cleanse both mind and body. Yoga is a technical science with a strong theoretical base. The combined knowledge of both theory and practice is known as Yogasasthra revealed through Ashtanga yoga Ashtanga yoga is generally divided into two classifications: -
Ashtanga yoga is generally divided into two classifications: -
Hatha yoga / Raja yoga
Hatha yoga is more physically based- Asana and Pranayama, whilst Raja yoga based in- (Yema, Niyamas, Prethyahara,Dharma,Dhyana & samadhi ) focuses upon the mind. Therefore, a practical session of yoga begins with the Asana. The Asanas are grouped into seven types of postures. They are:-Meditative, sitting, lying on the back and front, balancing postures, standing postures and relaxing postures.
These cycles of postures are to be performed in a particular sequence in the form of posture and counter posture. This should be done under the guidance of an experienced teacher, as improper practice is very harmful. It is advisable to never practice the postures through simply reading a book about yoga. Asana means posture. Moreover a classical steady posture preceded and proceeded by various movements. Movements and posture are equally important. Each Asana should be practiced in conjunction with a coordination of breathing. For every static posture, normal breathing should be practised. Specific breathing is applicable only during movements. There are twelve basic postures, from which all other postures originate.
Anyone can practice yoga, irrespective of age, nationality, sex or religion. Yoga is suitable for youngsters and on up into old age, including those who may be weakened or diseased. The daily practice of a few basic postures (Asana), breathing exercise and meditation for a session of forty-five minutes to one hour is enough to maintain the health of an aspirant in all aspects.
